Akatsuka Station (赤塚駅) is in Mito, Ibaraki Prefecture. East Japan Railway Company runs it. It opened on 4 January 1894 as a station of the Nippon Railway.
History
Akatsuka Station opened on 4 January 1894 as a station of the Nippon Railway. On 1 November 1906 the railway was nationalised. On 12 October 1909 the station was made part of the Jōban Line. On 24 October 1926 a line of the Ibaraki Railway opened, later known as the Ibaraki Line of Ibaraki Kōtsū. On 1 June 1949 the Japanese National Railways was formed.
On 11 February 1971 the Ibaraki Line was abolished. On 14 March 1985 luggage handling ended. On 1 April 1987 the station passed to East Japan Railway Company (JR East) and Japan Freight Railway Company (JR Freight). A rail siding to the flour and grain mills south of the station was removed after the factory closed at the end of 1990, and the grain trains that used it stopped. Regular freight trains ended on 1 April 1991.
Rebuilding of the station building began on 9 October 1998. A free passage was completed on 1 April 1999. A temporary station building over the tracks came into use on 21 November 1999. The new station building and station square opened on 24 March 2000. On 20 October 2000 train-linked escalators began operating, which change direction with the trains. On 18 November 2001 Suica became usable.
On 10 December 2005 the Japan Freight Railway station closed. On 1 April 2015 JR Mito Rail Service took over station operations as an outsourced station. On 1 July 2016 the operations moved to JR East Station Service. On 29 February 2024 the Midori no Madoguchi ticket office closed.
