Asahi Station (旭駅) is a ground-level station in Asahi, Chiba, on the Sōbu Main Line, run by East Japan Railway Company. It opened on 1 June 1897 as Asahimachi Station (旭町駅).
History
The Sōbu Railway opened the station on 1 June 1897, when its line from Honjo to Chōshi was completed. It was bought on 1 September 1907 and became an Imperial Railways Agency station. It was renamed Asahi Station on 1 October 1959, because Asahi had by then become a city.
The current station building was completed on 14 April 1966. Freight handling ended on 1 July 1973. The station became a stop for limited express trains in March 1975. East Japan Railway Company took over on 1 April 1987.
In 2003 the post of station manager was abolished. Suica became usable on 14 March 2009, when the station joined the Tokyo commuter area, and automatic ticket gates came into use. A station-front rotary was completed in December 2010. Elevators were installed on the platforms on 26 December 2014.
Station work was outsourced on 20 October 2015. Reserved-seat ticket machines were removed on 6 February 2016. The Midori no Madoguchi ticket office closed on 31 August 2023. A reserved-seat ticket machine was reinstalled on 1 September 2023.
