Choshi Station (銚子駅) is a ground-level station in Choshi, Chiba Prefecture. East Japan Railway Company (JR East) runs it on the Sōbu Main Line. It opened on 1 June 1897.
History
Choshi Station opened on 1 June 1897 as a station of the first Sōbu Railway (総武鉄道). A freight branch line to Shinsei opened on 28 March 1900. On 1 September 1907 the government bought the Sōbu Railway, and the station came under the Imperial Railways Agency (帝国鉄道庁). In 1923 the Choshi Electric Railway (銚子電気鉄道) began operating.
On 19 July 1945 an air raid burned the station building. It was rebuilt on 5 January 1948. On 21 April 1974 a Midori no Madoguchi ticket office (みどりの窓口) and a travel centre opened. On 26 October 1974 the line between Sakura and Choshi was electrified. The freight branch to Shinsei closed on 31 March 1978. On 1 April 1987 the Sōbu Main Line became part of JR East.
The station marked the anniversary of its opening on 1 June 1997, and a commemorative event was held that year. In 2007 the station building was renovated during the Chiba Destination Campaign (ちばデスティネーションキャンペーン). A NEWDAYS shop, an accessible toilet, a waiting room and a tourist office for Choshi were added. On 14 March 2009 the Suica card became usable. The station also joined the Tokyo suburban fare zone, and automatic ticket gates began operating.
Rebuilding of the station building began in October 2016. Toilets and the waiting room closed, and temporary facilities were used. The old station building closed on 16 July 2017, except the staff room. The new building's station office, car rental office and tourist office opened first. The new ticket gates, concourse and waiting room came into use on 16 February 2018. The new toilets opened on 1 March 2018. NEWDAYS and station lunch boxes went back on sale on 23 March 2018. The new building was completed on 28 March 2018, and an opening ceremony was held on 13 April 2018. The Midori no Madoguchi closed on 31 October 2022. On 1 November 2022 a reserved-seat ticket machine that speaks (話せる指定席券売機) was introduced.
