Fuji Station (富士駅) is in Fuji, Shizuoka Prefecture. Central Japan Railway Company (JR Central) and Japan Freight Railway Company (JR Freight) operate it. It opened on 21 April 1909.
History
The station opened on 21 April 1909 on the national Tōkaidō line, handling passengers and freight. The line was renamed the Tōkaidō Main Line the same year. On 17 April 1910 the Fuji Railway horse tramway began running to the station front. On 20 July 1913 the Fuji Minobu Railway (富士身延鉄道) opened its own Fuji Station as a general station, and its line was extended to Fujinomiya Station. The horse tramway was abolished.
On 20 June 1927 the station yard on the Fuji Minobu Railway side was electrified as part of that railway's electrification. On 1 October 1938 the Fuji Minobu Railway was leased by the national government and became the Minobu Line. It was formally nationalised on 1 May 1941.
On 1 February 1949 the station yard was electrified with the Numazu to Shizuoka electrification. A private line for the Dai-Showa Paper Fuji plant, now the Nippon Paper Fuji plant, began running on 15 August 1951. The station building was rebuilt for the second time on 10 July 1964.
On 28 September 1969 the Minobu Line between Fuji and Tatebori was rerouted and doubled. The Minobu Line tracks that had run east from the station were switched to the current westward route. A container base opened on 1 August 1971. A travel centre opened on 1 October 1972. Parcel handling ended on 1 November 1986.
On 1 April 1987 the station passed to JR Central and JR Freight. Automatic ticket gates were introduced on 30 January 1993. On 18 March 2007 the upbound Moonlight Nagara night rapid train to Tokyo stopped calling here, while downbound trains still stopped. TOICA became usable on the Tōkaidō Main Line from 1 March 2008. ASTY Fuji opened on 4 December 2009. On 13 March 2010 TOICA also became usable on the Minobu Line as far as Nishi-Fujinomiya Station.
