Fukuroi Station (袋井駅) is in Fukuroi, Shizuoka Prefecture. Central Japan Railway Company (JR Central) runs it. It opened on 16 April 1889.
History
The station opened on 16 April 1889 when the government railway between Shizuoka and Hamamatsu opened. On 1 April 1895 the line was named, and the station became part of the Tōkaidō Line, later renamed the Tōkaidō Main Line. On 28 December 1902 the Akiba Horse Tramway (later the Shizuoka Railway's Akiba Line) began running to the front of the station. On 12 January 1914 the new Fukuroi Station of the Chūen Railway (later the Shizuoka Railway's Sunen Line) opened.
On 14 October 1959 the station building was rebuilt as a reinforced concrete single-storey building. On 20 September 1962 the new Fukuroi station of the Akiba Line closed. On 28 August 1967 the Fukuroi station of the Sunen Line closed. Freight handling ended on 21 January 1984. Parcel handling ended on 14 March 1985.
The Midori no Madoguchi ticket office opened on 17 February 1987. On 1 April 1987 the station passed to JR Central. Automatic ticket gates came into use on 14 November 1992.
In June 2007 JR Central and Fukuroi City signed a memorandum to start talks on a new north-south free passage and an elevated station building. In August 2007 talks began between the national government and JR Central over the cost of rebuilding the station, and the signing of a construction agreement between Fukuroi City and JR Central was postponed. TOICA service began on 1 March 2008. On 1 June 2009 the Ministry of Land, Infrastructure, Transport and Tourism issued guidelines on building and managing free passages, and talks between JR Central and Fukuroi City resumed. On 30 November 2014 the elevated station building and the north-south free passage were completed. The free passage is called Dō-man-naka Street, the north exit is the Akiba Exit, and the south exit is the Sunen Exit.
