Hakone-Yumoto Station (箱根湯本駅) is a ground-level station with a station building over the tracks, in Hakone, Kanagawa Prefecture. Odakyu Hakone runs it. It opened on 1 June 1919.
History
A tramway line (later the Odawara city line) reached Yumoto on 1 October 1888. On 1 June 1919 the railway line between Hakone-Yumoto and Gōra opened, and Hakone-Yumoto Station opened with it. The tram stop was also renamed Hakone-Yumoto. On 1 October 1935 the tram stop closed, because trains began running into Odawara Station (小田原駅), and its land was reused. On 1 August 1950 Odakyu Electric Railway trains began running into the station.
In 1962 Odakyu Electric Railway began rebuilding the station. In 1968, to make way for the work, Kanagawa Prefecture carried out the removal of houses under the Land Expropriation Act (土地収用法) in place of their owners. On 29 October 1970 the rebuilding work was completed. On 17 May 1974 the station building and the forecourt were finished.
On 12 July 1982 Odakyu's larger cars began running into the station. On 1 October 2005 Romancecar seat tickets went on sale for trips only between here and Odawara. On 18 March 2006 only Odakyu trains ran between here and Odawara. From 2008 the only Odakyu through trains on that section were limited express trains and short local trains. In 2008 the limited express Metro Hakone (メトロはこね) began running from here through to Kita-Senju Station (北千住駅) on the Chiyoda Line, by way of the Odakyu Line. On 14 March 2009 the new station building opened.
In October 2019 a typhoon damaged the line. Service was suspended on 12 October, and trains toward Odawara resumed the next day. The section toward Gōra was badly damaged, with the track bed and bridges washed away, so replacement buses ran later that month. Trains between here and Gōra resumed on 23 July 2020, and the replacement buses had stopped the day before.
