Higashi-Nakano Station (東中野駅) in Nakano, Tokyo, serves the Chūō–Sōbu Line (Local) and the Ōedo Line, run by East Japan Railway Company and the Tokyo Metropolitan Bureau of Transportation. It opened on 14 June 1906 as Kashiwagi Station (柏木駅).
History
The station opened on 14 June 1906 as Kashiwagi Station (柏木駅) on the Kōbu Railway, for passengers only and with only an east exit. The Kōbu Railway was nationalised on 1 October 1906. On 12 October 1909 the station was placed on the Chūō East Line. Luggage handling began on 20 December 1914. The station was renamed Higashi-Nakano on 1 January 1917. In 1928 the east exit was rebuilt, and a west exit was opened to handle more passengers.
The Japanese National Railways took over on 1 June 1949. Around 1962 a detour under the tracks and a footpath were built a short distance east of the east exit. They eased traffic at the Kirigaya crossing (桐ケ谷踏切), which was often blocked.
Luggage handling ended on 1 February 1984. JR East took over on 1 April 1987. On 5 December 1988 two trains collided inside the station, and two people died. The accident led JR in the Tokyo area to speed up installing the ATS-P train protection system. Automatic ticket gates were installed on 21 September 1991.
The Toei subway station opened on 19 December 1997 on what was then its new line, later called the Ōedo Line. The line was renamed the Ōedo Line on 20 April 2000. Suica became usable at JR East on 18 November 2001, and PASMO became usable on the Toei line on 18 March 2007. On 31 August 2012 the commercial complex Atrevi Higashi-Nakano (アトレヴィ東中野) opened.
The west station square was completed on 1 March 2015. On 20 March 2018 the west exit of the JR station was contracted out. On 1 March 2019 the JR east exit became unstaffed for the whole day, when a remote station operation system was introduced. On 16 December 2023 smart platform doors came into use on the JR platform. Eki-Net Q Ticket started on 1 October 2025.
