History
The station opened on 20 March 1964 as a Japanese National Railways station between Ōmiya and Hasuda. At that time the area in front of the station was woodland, and most trains passed through without stopping. An opening ceremony was held on 25 March 1964. On 2 August 1969 the address changed to Higashi-Ōmiya after the land readjustment project for the first district was completed the day before.
From the 1980s, as the population nearby grew, more trains stopped here. On 1 April 1987 the station passed to JR East. The Beans Annex station building opened on the west side on 10 July 1996. An up escalator on the east side began operating on 24 March 2001. Suica became usable on 18 November 2001. An elevator on the west side began operating in July 2002.
Elevators and escalators inside the ticket gates began operating in August 2011. At an unknown date in 2014 the station became unstaffed in the early morning hours, and a remote station control system, now the customer support call system, was introduced. An elevator on the east side was also installed in 2014.
The Midori no Madoguchi ticket office closed on 31 January 2019, and station operations were contracted out on 1 March 2019. Rapid trains began stopping here on 13 March 2021. The NewDays KIOSK inside the ticket gates closed on 8 September 2023.
