Iwanami Station (岩波駅) is a ground-level station in Susono, Shizuoka Prefecture. Central Japan Railway Company (JR Central) runs it. It opened on 1 May 1911 as a signal station on the Tōkaidō Line.

History

The Iwanami signal station opened on 1 May 1911 as part of the national railway Tōkaidō Line, between Gotemba Station and Sano Station (now Susono Station). It was renamed the Iwanami signal station on 18 July 1912. On 1 April 1922 it became a signal yard. On 1 December 1934 the section of the Tōkaidō Line from Kōzu through Iwanami to Numazu was renamed the Gotemba Line.

The Gotemba Line was made single-track on 11 July 1943. On 8 December 1944 Iwanami became a station and began passenger service. Parcel handling started on 5 March 1946. On 1 July 1968 the Gotemba to Numazu section was electrified, and the station yard was electrified with it. The switchback was removed at the same time. On 31 July 1969 the station began handling freight carried on private sidings. Parcel handling ended on 1 February 1971. Freight handling ended on 15 November 1982.

On 1 April 1987 the national railway was split up. The station became part of Central Japan Railway Company (JR Central). On 22 June 1989 the station building was rebuilt and moved onto an elevated structure over the tracks. A passing track was added on 31 October 1989.

TOICA could be used from 13 March 2010. On 26 May 2019 a new ground-level station building opened, with a multi-purpose toilet, along with the up-line platform. On 29 November 2020 a new elevator opened. A customer support service is planned for March 2027.
