Iwase Station (岩瀬駅) is a ground-level station in Sakuragawa, Ibaraki Prefecture. East Japan Railway Company runs it. It is on the Mito Line. It opened on 16 January 1889 as a station of the Mito Railway (水戸鉄道).
History
The Mito Railway opened Iwase Station on 16 January 1889. On 1 March 1892 the station passed to the Japan Railway (日本鉄道). The current station building was completed in 1898. On 1 November 1906 the station became part of the government railways under the nationalisation law. On 12 October 1909 the new line-name rules made it a station on the Mito Line.
On 7 April 1918 a station of the first Tsukuba Railway opened at Iwase, but the Tsukuba to Iwase section was closed at first because there were not enough vehicles. On 7 September 1918 services began between Makabe and Iwase. On 20 March 1945 the first Tsukuba Railway merged with the Jōsō Railway to form the Jōsō Tsukuba Railway. On 1 June 1965 the Jōsō Tsukuba Railway merged with the Kashima Sankū Railway to form the Kantō Railway. On 1 April 1979 the Kantō Railway's Tsukuba Line was split off as the Tsukuba Railway.
On 20 January 1982 the national railway ended freight handling. On 1 February 1984 it ended parcel handling. On 1 April 1987 the national railway was split up, and the station became part of JR East. The Tsukuba Line closed at the same time.
Suica could be used from 18 November 2001. On 1 April 2014 JR Mito Railway Service took over station duties, so the station became a contracted-out station. On 1 July 2015 the station duties moved to JR East Station Service. The Midori no Madoguchi counter closed on 31 January 2019.
