Kanda Station (神田駅) is an elevated station in Chiyoda, Tokyo. East Japan Railway Company runs it, and Tokyo Metro runs its Ginza Line station here. Its lines are the Ginza Line, the Yamanote Line, the Chuo Line (Rapid) and the Keihin–Tohoku Line. It opened in 1919.
History
Kanda Station (神田駅) opened on 1 March 1919 as an intermediate station on the Chuo Line. The Railway Agency had just extended the line from Manseibashi to Tokyo. On 1 November 1925 the Tohoku Line was extended from Akihabara, and Kanda became an interchange with the Keihin Line (now the Keihin–Tohoku Line) and the Yamanote Line. On 21 November 1931 the Tokyo Underground Railway opened a station here, now on the Ginza Line. On 1 September 1941 the Tokyo Underground Railway's lines passed to the Teito Rapid Transit Authority.
On 1 June 1949 the Japanese National Railways was formed. On 17 September 1956 a platform was added, separating the Keihin–Tohoku and Yamanote trains. On 5 February 1960 luggage handling ended. On 1 April 1987, when national railways were split up, the station passed to JR East. On 13 March 1988 Keihin–Tohoku rapid services began, so Keihin–Tohoku trains passed through during the daytime. On 1 December 1990 automatic gates were installed at the south and west gates, and on 8 December 1990 at the north and east gates.
Suica could be used from 18 November 2001. On 1 April 2004 the Ginza Line was privatised and passed to Tokyo Metro. PASMO could be used on Tokyo Metro from 18 March 2007. On 14 March 2015 Keihin–Tohoku rapid trains began stopping here. On 20 June 2015 the Ginza Line platform got a departure melody.
On 13 February 2016 platform doors came into use on the Yamanote platforms two and three. On 14 March 2020 Chuo Line trains from Tokyo were unified as rapid services, and the Chuo Line local trains that had stopped here ended. On 23 October 2019 platform doors came into use on the Keihin–Tohoku platforms one and four. In autumn 2020 JR East opened a station shared office called STATION BOOTH.
On 31 October 2021 the Midori no Madoguchi ticket office closed. On 2 October 2023 JR East added a sub-station name, Earth Pharmaceutical Head Office Front. The Yamanote platforms two and three got a departure melody that is the commercial song of the Mondamin oral hygiene brand. Japanese Wikipedia says these arrangements run for five years. On 1 October 2025 Eki-net Q Ticket service started.
