Kandatsu Station is a ground-level station with an elevated concourse in Tsuchiura, Ibaraki, run by East Japan Railway Company and Japan Freight Railway Company. It opened on 4 November 1895 as a Nippon Railway station.
History
The Nippon Railway (日本鉄道) opened the station on 4 November 1895. It was nationalized on 1 November 1906 and became a government railway station. On 12 October 1909 it was assigned to the Jōban Line. The Japanese National Railways was formed on 1 June 1949. Luggage handling ended on 14 March 1985. On 1 April 1987 the station passed to East Japan Railway Company and Japan Freight Railway Company.
An automatic ticket gate opened on 1 August 1995. Freight train service ended on 3 October 1998. Suica became usable on 18 November 2001. The departure melody changed on 1 August 2009. From 14 March 2015 all limited express trains passed through, and only local trains stopped here.
Redevelopment work began on 1 June 2016. Station work was outsourced on 10 July 2016. The old station building closed on 21 October 2016. A temporary station opened the next day, on 22 October 2016, a short distance toward Tsuchiura from the old one.
The Midori no Madoguchi ticket office closed on 11 March 2018. A part of the free passage opened on 23 March 2018, and part of the new station on 24 March 2018. The full elevated station and free passage opened on 24 March 2019.
