History
Katsuta Station (勝田駅) began handling train operations on 16 December 1909. It opened on 18 March 1910 as Katsuta Station on the Joban Line of the Railway Bureau, handling passengers and freight. On 25 December 1913, the Minato Line of the Minato Railway (a predecessor of Ibaraki Kotsu) opened, and the station became a transfer station. On 5 September 1942, a private siding for the Hitachi Mito Works opened to carry materials in and products out, and employee transport trains began. On 1 August 1944, transport integration formed Ibaraki Kotsu, and the Minato Railway stations became Ibaraki Kotsu stations. On 1 June 1949, the Japanese National Railways was established.
On 15 November 1982, some Hitachi limited express trains began stopping here. On 1 February 1984, freight handling at the national railway station ended, and Ibaraki Kotsu ended wagon freight here the same day. On 14 March 1985, luggage handling ended. On 10 July 1985, a Midori no Madoguchi opened. On 31 March 1987, freight handling resumed at the national railway station, but apart from special vehicle transport (甲種輸送), no freight has been handled. On 1 April 1987, the national railway was split up, and its stations became JR East and Japan Freight Railway stations. On 20 September 1993, the Hitachi employee train was abolished. On 13 October 1995, automatic ticket gates came into use.
On 18 November 2001, Suica became usable on JR East toward Mito. On 21 July 2002, the station building was moved onto an elevated level. On 16 October 2004, Suica became usable on JR East toward Hitachi. On 1 April 2008, Ibaraki Kotsu transferred the Minato Line to Hitachinaka Seaside Railway, and its stations became Hitachinaka Seaside Railway stations.
On 11 March 2011, the Great East Japan Earthquake damaged the station building, and part of its ceiling collapsed. On 31 March 2011, the JR station reopened. On 3 July 2011, the Hitachinaka Seaside Railway station reopened. On 1 April 2019, a tourist information office was set up next to the ticket gate.
