The station opened as Shōnan Station with the opening of the Keihin Kyuko Electric Railway (now part of the Keikyu Line) in conjunction with the Tokyo Kyuko Electric Railway (Daiei Kyuko) Kurihama Line, its name being taken from the Japanese name for Singapore under Japanese military occupation.
