The name is derived from a place name, originally part of Tsuzuki District Yamada Village, which became Yamada area when Nakagawa Village was established in 1889, and the Kitagana area was set up in the northern part, then in 1939, when it was incorporated into Yokohama City, Kitayamada-cho was established in the Yamada Kitagana area, and it is now located in Tsuzuki-ku Kitayamada 1-chome, via Kōhoku-ku.
