History
A signal station opened on 10 April 1911 on the government Tokaido Line between Ejiri (now Shimizu) and Shizuoka. Local residents then began a campaign for a passenger stop. The signal station was renamed Kusanagi signal yard on 1 April 1922. In September 1923 the village assembly passed a resolution asking for a station, but the Great Kanto Earthquake interrupted the campaign. The petition was restarted in 1924. The station opened on 3 April 1926 as a passenger-only station.
Freight handling began on 1 March 1930. A footbridge opened in July 1956. Freight handling ended on 1 October 1967. The former station building was completed in 1973. Luggage handling ended on 14 March 1985. A Midori no Madoguchi counter opened on 29 January 1987. JR Central took over the station on 1 April 1987.
The plaza and park in front of the station were improved in 1988. On 11 November 1988 the Orient Express, which had been on show at Shizuoka Station, was brought onto the middle track at Kusanagi to turn around. Automatic ticket gates came into use on 19 December 1992. TOICA could be used from 1 March 2008. The elevated station building and north-south passage opened on 18 September 2016.
