Mobara Station (茂原駅) is an elevated station in Mobara, Chiba Prefecture. East Japan Railway Company runs it on the Sotobō Line. It opened on 17 April 1897.
History
The station opened on 17 April 1897, when the Bōsō Railway opened the line between Ōami and Ichinomiya (now Kazusa-Ichinomiya). At that time the station name was read Mohara. The Imperial Railway Agency bought the Bōsō Railway on 1 September 1907. In 1909 a man-powered tramway between Chōnan and Mobara opened and connected here.
The passenger service on the tramway ended around 1924, and its tracks were removed around 1926. The Nanso Railway opened on 1 August 1930 and connected here. On 10 July 1935 the station's reading was changed to Mobara. The Nanso Railway closed on 1 March 1939, and the station became a standalone station again.
A Midori no Madoguchi ticket office opened in April 1973. Freight handling ended on 1 December 1981 and moved to the new Mobara station. Parcel handling ended on 1 February 1984. On 27 October 1986 the station was rebuilt as an elevated station with an island platform. On 1 April 1987 JR East took over. On 10 December 1987 more tracks came into use and the elevated station building was completed.
Automatic ticket gates opened on 9 September 1995. Suica became usable toward Chiba on 18 November 2001, and toward Ōhara on 16 October 2004.
The Bi-u Plaza travel office (びゅうプラザ) closed on 31 August 2018. The Midori no Madoguchi closed on 24 August 2023, and a talking reserved-seat machine was introduced the next day.
