Moriyama Station (守山駅) is in Moriyama, Shiga Prefecture. West Japan Railway Company runs it, and Japan Freight Railway Company also operates here. It opened on 16 April 1912.
History
The station opened on 16 April 1912 on the Tōkaidō Line between Yasu and Kusatsu, for passengers and freight. On 30 July 1945 carrier-based US Navy aircraft strafed a train that had just left Moriyama Station, killing several people in the Moriyama air raid.
The current elevated station building was built in April 1973. Parcel handling ended on 14 March 1985. The Shin-Kaisoku rapid trains began stopping here on 1 November 1986. JR West and JR Freight took over on 1 April 1987. On 13 March 1988 the Biwako Line nickname started.
Automatic gates opened on 11 March 1998. Freight trains stopped on 1 October 2003, and ICOCA became usable on 1 November 2003. The JR Kyoto and Kobe Line operations management system was introduced on 1 October 2006. Station announcements were updated on 18 March 2007. On 18 May 2013 the extended platform canopies opened, so that longer trains could stop.
Approach melodies started on 12 March 2015. Station numbering started on 17 March 2018. JR West Transport Service took over operation on 1 November 2018. The Midori no Madoguchi closed on 26 November 2021, and a Midori ticket machine plus was introduced the next day.
