Ohara Station (大原駅) is a ground-level station in Isumi, Chiba Prefecture. East Japan Railway Company and Isumi Railway run it. It serves the Sotobō Line. It opened on 13 December 1899.
History
Ohara Station opened on 13 December 1899 as the terminus of the Bōsō Railway, handling passengers and freight. On 1 September 1907 the Bōsō Railway was bought by the government and the station became a government railway station. On 15 December 1912 Chiba Prefecture's Ōhara–Ōtaki hand-pushed tramway opened, later known as the Isumi Tramway. On 20 June 1913 the line was extended to Katsuura. On 31 August 1927 the Isumi Tramway was abolished.
On 1 April 1930 the national Kihara Line opened, now the Isumi Railway Isumi Line. Freight handling ended on 1 February 1984. On 1 April 1987 the station passed to East Japan Railway Company (JR East). On 24 March 1988 the Kihara Line was converted to a third-sector railway, the Isumi Railway Isumi Line, and the distance from Nishi-Ōhara was adjusted slightly.
On 16 October 2004 Sōbu Line rapid trains no longer ran through to the station, and Suica became usable for trips toward Chiba. The station joined the Tokyo commuter area, and automatic gates were installed. On 20 March 2008 a reserved-seat ticket machine was installed. On 14 March 2009 Suica became usable toward Awa-Kamogawa, and the whole Sotobō Line joined the Tokyo commuter area. On 18 February 2016 the reserved-seat machine was removed. On 31 March 2024 the Midori no Madoguchi closed, and on 1 April 2024 a reserved-seat machine was reinstalled.
