Ryūgasakishi Station (龍ケ崎市駅) is an over-the-tracks station in Ryūgasaki, Ibaraki. East Japan Railway Company runs it. The Kantō Railway has a separate station building here.
History
The station opened on 14 August 1900 as Sanuki Station (佐貫駅). The Nippon Railway's Tsuchiura Line and the Ryūzaki Railway's station opened together. On 1 November 1906 the Nippon Railway was nationalised, and the station came under the government railway. On 12 October 1909 it became part of the Jōban Line. On 13 May 1944 the Ryūzaki Railway passed its railway business to Kashima Sangū Railway. On 1 June 1949 Japanese National Railways was formed.
On 1 June 1965 Kashima Sangū Railway and Jōsō Tsukuba Railway merged to form Kantō Railway. Freight and parcel handling ended on 1 February 1984. On 7 July 1984 the national railways began work on an over-the-tracks station building. It opened on 10 March 1985, and the Kantō Railway got its own separate building. On 1 April 1987 the national railway station became part of East Japan Railway Company (JR East).
Automatic ticket gates opened on 25 February 1995. The Suica IC card became usable at the JR station on 18 November 2001. The Kantō Railway station was rebuilt on 10 January 2009. PASMO became usable at the Kantō Railway station on 14 March 2009.
From May 2012 the Kantō Railway station was unstaffed at some times of the day. On 3 June 2017 JR East changed the departure melody. On 14 March 2020 the JR East station was renamed Ryūgasakishi Station (龍ケ崎市駅). On 16 September 2021 the Kantō Railway station became unstaffed all day.
