Samukawa Station (寒川駅) is in Samukawa, Kanagawa. East Japan Railway Company runs it on the Sagami Line. It opened on 28 September 1921 as a station of the Sagami Railway.
History
Samukawa Station opened on 28 September 1921 as a station of the Sagami Railway (相模鉄道), when the line from Chigasaki to Samukawa opened, along with a freight line to Kawasamukawa Station (川寒川駅). A freight branch to Shinomiya Station opened on 10 May 1922. The freight branch to Kawasamukawa Station was abolished on 7 November 1931, the date it was officially announced.
On 1 June 1944 the Sagami Railway was nationalised, and the station became part of the Sagami Line run by the Ministry of Transport (運輸通信省). That railway was later Japanese National Railways. Freight handling ended on 25 September 1971.
A free passage (自由通路) called Sakaebashi opened in November 1982. Parcel handling ended on 1 February 1984, and the Samukawa Branch line closed on 1 April 1984. On 7 September 1985 the station building was rebuilt above the tracks. On 1 April 1987 the station became part of East Japan Railway Company (JR East), after the national railways were divided and privatised.
Automatic ticket gates opened on 20 February 1997. Suica became usable on 18 November 2001. Escalators and elevators were installed on the south side in April 2006, and on the north side in March 2012. On 1 July 2013 station operations were outsourced.
