Sawa Station (佐和駅) is an over-the-tracks station in Hitachinaka, Ibaraki. East Japan Railway Company runs it. It opened on 25 February 1897.
History
Sawa Station opened on 25 February 1897 as a station of the Nippon Railway. On 1 November 1906 the Nippon Railway was nationalised, and the station came under the government railway. On 12 October 1909 it became part of the Jōban Line. On 1 June 1949 Japanese National Railways was formed.
Freight handling ended on 15 March 1972. Parcel handling ended on 1 February 1984. On 1 April 1987 the station became part of JR East. The Suica IC card became usable on 16 October 2004.
In March 2006 automatic ticket gates and liquid crystal displays were installed. The Midori no Madoguchi was closed, and a ticket machine called Moshimoshi Kaerukun took its place. The platform fence was replaced in September 2006. A lift was installed on 5 November 2010. The Kaerukun machine ended on 9 February 2012, and a reserved-seat ticket machine began on 10 February 2012.
From 1 July 2013 JR Mito Railway Service ran station operations under contract. In December 2013 a waiting room was added to the upbound platform, which serves Mito and Ueno. On 1 July 2015 operations moved to JR East Station Service. On 2 September 2023 the east-west free passage and the over-the-tracks station building opened.
