Shibukawa Station (渋川駅) is in Shibukawa, Gunma Prefecture. East Japan Railway Company (JR East) and Japan Freight Railway Company (JR Freight) run it. It opened on 1 July 1921.
History
Work on the Jōetsu South Line (上越南線), later the Jōetsu Line, between Shin-Maebashi and Shibukawa was completed on 22 June 1921. The station opened as a general station on 1 July 1921, when the line opened. On 31 March 1924 the Jōetsu South Line reached Numata Station.
The Nagahara Line, later the Agatsuma Line, opened to Nagahara Station on 2 January 1945 and began freight service. Passenger service on that line began on 5 August 1945. The Nagahara Line was electrified on 10 June 1967. The section from Nagahara to Ōmae opened on 7 March 1971 as the Agatsuma Line.
On 3 June 1981 Emperor Shōwa and Empress Kōjun visited the prefecture for the national athletic meet. A special train ran from Harajuku Station to Shibukawa. Car freight handling ended on 1 February 1984. Parcel handling ended on 14 March 1985. On 1 April 1987 the station passed to JR East and JR Freight. Container freight handling began on 10 March 1990.
On 16 October 2004 Suica became usable, but only for trips towards Takasaki. In August 2005 the transport of industrial salt and oil ended. Freight train service was cancelled on 18 March 2006. On 14 March 2009 Suica became usable as far as Mizukami Station. On 1 October 2014 Suica became usable on the Agatsuma Line.
The Byū Plaza (びゅうプラザ) closed on 31 March 2014. The Midori no Madoguchi ticket office closed on 31 October 2023. On 1 November 2023 a talking reserved-seat ticket machine was introduced.
