Tateyama Station (館山駅) is a station in Tateyama, Chiba. East Japan Railway Company runs it. It is on the Uchibō Line. It opened on 24 May 1919.
History
Tateyama Station opened on 24 May 1919 as Awa-Hōjō Station (安房北条駅) on the Hōjō Line. On 15 April 1929 the Hōjō Line was joined to the Bōsō Line when that line reached Awa-Kamogawa. On 1 April 1933 the Bōsō West Line was split off, and the station became part of it. On 1 March 1946 it was renamed Tateyama Station. Electrification was completed on 11 July 1969. On 15 July 1972 the route was renamed the Uchibō Line.
Freight handling ended on 15 November 1982. Parcel handling ended on 3 March 1986. On 1 April 1987 the station became part of East Japan Railway Company (JR East).
A new station building with an over-the-tracks design and a free passage was completed on 27 March 1999. In September 1999 the station was chosen for the Kantō Ekihyakusen list (関東の駅百選). The reason given was its stylish Spanish-style station building, which suits the southern Bōsō area.
The Suica IC card became usable on 14 March 2009, and the station joined the Tokyo commuter area. Automatic ticket gates and a reserved-seat ticket machine were also installed. On 9 November 2019 the departure melody changed to 'Forever Love' by X JAPAN. The Midori no Madoguchi ticket office closed on 22 March 2023. A talking reserved-seat ticket machine was introduced on 23 March 2023.
