Tōbu-Utsunomiya Station (東武宇都宮駅) is an elevated station in Utsunomiya, Tochigi Prefecture, run by Tobu Railway. It opened on 11 August 1931 on the Utsunomiya Line.
History
The station opened on 11 August 1931. On 18 August 1931 an opening ceremony for the Utsunomiya Line was held in the station square. On 12 July 1945 the station building burned down in an air raid on Utsunomiya. On 10 November 1959 the Tobu Utsunomiya building was completed. On 28 November 1959 the station renovation was completed, and the Tobu Utsunomiya department store opened.
Freight handling ended on 31 December 1960. In 1973 a new annex was completed. On 20 March 1985 the department store was refreshed, and the station was moved slightly south and enlarged. On 21 August 1991 the station introduced the first departure melody of any Tobu station. On 28 September 1995 the west building was completed. On 1 October 1995 the department store reopened. On 1 March 2006 an elevator linking the west exit to the ticket level came into use.
On 18 March 2007 PASMO became usable. In October 2007 home sensors were installed in preparation for one-person operation. On 31 October 2007 a driver's departure melody was introduced with one-person operation. On 17 March 2012 the station was given a number under Tobu's station numbering system.
On 15 June 2019 the departure melody was changed for one year to 「カリフォルニア・シャワー」. On 15 June 2020 that melody was kept in use.
