History
Tokorozawa Station (所沢駅) opened on 21 March 1895. The Kawagoe Railway (川越鉄道) opened it. That company later became the former Seibu Railway. In 1915 the Musashino Railway (武蔵野鉄道) began sharing use of the station, and the Kawagoe Railway handled station work. On 4 January 1940, a head-on collision between Musashino Railway trains happened near the station.
From 1958 to 1967, the tracks in and around the station were made double track in stages. In 1963, ten-car trains began running between Ikebukuro and this station. It was the first ten-car train service on a Japanese private railway.
In 1983, a temporary east station building and an overhead bridge opened, and the east exit was set up. In 1986 the south exit opened, when the Seibu Department Store Tokorozawa branch opened. In 1989 the Tokorozawa Station Building and a Seibu information office opened, and the station had a large renovation. In 1990 a north transfer bridge opened. In 1991 the east ticket gate moved and a free passage opened. In 2000 the south (Seibu) gate and the east gate were combined into a new gate, which is now the south exit.
Work on a new station building began in March 2010. On 31 July 2010, the west ticket gate stopped being used. A temporary west gate opened on the first floor of the station building. On 8 March 2012, part of the new elevated station building opened, with its west exit and ticket gates. The temporary west gate and the bridge in the middle of the platforms closed then. A TOMONY convenience store opened beside the gate. Emio Tokorozawa's first phase, outside the gates, opened in 2012. On 27 November 2012, a passage from the east exit to the new building and new station toilets opened. The second phase of Emio, inside the gates, opened the same day, and the south exit gate closed. In April 2013 a roof garden and a passage from the south exit were completed. The renovation was finished in June 2013.
Grand Emio Tokorozawa opened on the east side on 2 March 2018, with seventy-seven shops. Emio and the station building shops had all closed before it opened. In 2020 a monument with characters from My Neighbor Totoro (となりのトトロ) was placed at the east rotary. On 2 September 2020, the second phase of Grand Emio Tokorozawa opened, and the south exit gate began service. On 3 November 2020, the departure melody changed to music related to My Neighbor Totoro.
