Tomobe Station (友部駅) is a station in Kasama, Ibaraki Prefecture. East Japan Railway Company and Japan Freight Railway Company (JR Freight) run it. It serves the Mito Line. It opened on 1 July 1895 as a station of the Nippon Railway (日本鉄道).
History
Nippon Railway opened Tomobe Station on 1 July 1895 as an ordinary station on its Mito Line. On 4 November 1895 the Tsuchiura Line opened from Tsuchiura to Tomobe. On 1 November 1906 the railway was nationalised. On 12 October 1909 the station was placed on the Jōban Line. The Japanese National Railways (JNR) was formed on 1 June 1949.
On 2 October 1978 some limited express Hitachi trains began stopping here, with a timetable revision. Parcel handling ended on 14 March 1985. On 1 April 1987 the JNR was split up, and the station became part of JR East and JR Freight. Container freight for private sidings began on 10 May 1994. Automatic ticket gates started on 26 October 1995. Suica could be used from 18 November 2001.
In February 2005 the old station building was demolished, a temporary building was set up, and construction of a new station building began. The elevated station building opened on 4 March 2007, and the departure melody was changed to a song by Kyū Sakamoto. On 14 March 2015 the Ueno–Tokyo Line opened. Some morning local trains and daytime limited express trains could then reach Tokyo and Shinagawa without changing. The Midori no Madoguchi counter closed on 29 February 2024, and a talking reserved-seat ticket machine was introduced on 1 March 2024.
