Tsurumi is a railway station in Tokyo.

Tsurumi Station (鶴見駅) is in Tsurumi ward, Yokohama, and is served by the JI Tsurumi Line and the Keihin–Tōhoku Line. It is run by East Japan Railway Company and opened on 15 October 1872.

History

The station opened in 1872 (13 September by the old calendar) as a passenger station, one of the earliest railway stations in Japan. Double tracks were laid between Kawasaki and Tsurumi on 1 November 1879, and between Tsurumi and Yokohama on 7 May 1881. Freight handling began on 1 April 1898. The Keihin Line, now the Keihin–Tōhoku Line, began running on 20 December 1914. Breakdowns forced it to stop on 26 December 1914, and service resumed on 10 May 1915. Steam locomotive trains stopped calling here on 30 December 1915.

The Takashima freight branch opened from here on 17 June 1917. The west exit opened on 10 October 1920. On 21 August 1929 the Tokaido branch line, the Hinzuru Line, opened. A temporary stop of the Tsurumi Rinko Railway opened on 28 October 1930, and it moved near the national railway station on 14 June 1931. The Tsurumi Rinko Railway station opened at its present site on 23 December 1934.

The Tsurumi Rinko Railway was nationalized on 1 July 1943. Freight handling ended on 1 October 1974. On 1 March 1976 a freight branch from Hamakawasaki to Tsurumi, the Tokyo Freight Terminal line, opened, and the Musashino Line opened from here to Fuchuhonmachi.

The Hazawa Line opened from Tsurumi via Yokohama Hazawa to Totsuka on 1 October 1979. Luggage handling ended on 14 March 1985. On 1 April 1987 JR East took over. The Tokaido freight line between Shinagawa and Hamakawasaki was reorganized, so the next station on that side is now Hatchonawate. An automatic ticket gate was installed on 1 July 1992. Suica became usable on the Keihin-Tōhoku Line on 18 November 2001, and on the Tsurumi Line on 22 March 2002.

Platform doors on the Keihin-Tōhoku platform started on 3 March 2018. The Tsurumi Line transfer gates were removed on 28 February 2022.
