Yachimata Station is in Yachimata, Chiba. East Japan Railway Company runs it on the Sōbu Main Line. It opened on 1 May 1897 as a station of the Sobu Railway (総武鉄道).
History
Yachimata Station opened on 1 May 1897 as a station of the Sobu Railway (総武鉄道). On 1 September 1907 the Sobu Railway was acquired, and the station became part of the Imperial Railways Agency (帝国鉄道庁). On 18 May 1914 the Chiba Prefectural Railway (later the Narita Railway, 成田鉄道) opened its Yachimata Line. The Yachimata Line closed on 14 May 1940.
In 1926, the first year of the Showa era, a new station building opened. The section between Sakura and Choshi stations was electrified on 26 October 1974. Freight handling ended on 15 November 1982. On 1 April 1987 the station became part of East Japan Railway Company (JR East), after the national railways were divided and privatised.
Sobu Line Rapid trains began running through to the station on 16 March 1991, and the service was later extended to Naruto Station (成東駅). Automatic ticket gates were installed on 16 March 1996. Suica became usable on 18 November 2001. On 1 April 2004 a new station building above the tracks opened, along with part of the free passage and a north exit. The free passage was fully opened in March 2005. Station operations were outsourced on 1 September 2017. The Midori no Madoguchi ticket counter closed on 31 July 2022.
