Ageo Station (上尾駅) is an elevated station in Ageo, Saitama Prefecture. East Japan Railway Company runs it on the Takasaki Line. It opened on 28 July 1883 under the Nippon Railway.
History
Ageo Station opened on 28 July 1883 under the Nippon Railway. It is one of the oldest stations in the prefecture, along with Urawa, Kōnosu and Kumagaya. An overpass was built inside the station in 1896. On 1 November 1906, the Nippon Railway was nationalised, and the station became a state railway station. On 23 July 1911, a garden was built inside the station, and an opening ceremony was held. In 1923, the Great Kantō Earthquake damaged part of the station building, and it was repaired. On 12 February 1935, the rebuilt station building started operating. A completion ceremony was held in front of the station.
On 1 June 1960, the overpass was replaced, and a celebration was held. In August 1967, work started to raise the station onto an elevated concourse. On 10 June 1968, the new station building started operating. On 8 December 1969, the new station building was completed. On 21 August 1980, freight handling ended. In September 1983, the east exit redevelopment was completed. A commercial complex called Alicover (アリコベール) was built, and the free passage and platforms were widened. On 14 March 1985, a new limited express began stopping here, and parcel handling ended.
On 1 April 1987, the station became a JR East station, and a travel centre opened. In February 1995, a pedestrian deck was completed on the west side. On 2 March 1995, automatic ticket gates started. On 18 November 2001, Suica became usable.
In March 2002, a study group for the renovation of JR Ageo Station was formed, with members from public and private bodies. On 24 March 2003, the group submitted a recommendation to the city. On 16 October 2004, some Commuter Rapid trains started stopping here. On 19 April 2007, an extraordinary city council meeting approved a contract for the station building renovation. On 23 June 2007, renovation work started. On 14 March 2010, E'site Ageo opened. On 1 June 2010, the departure melody was changed to the Ageo city song. In 2011, the renovation was completed, and the east-west free passage was widened.
In March 2017, the station was removed from the stops of the limited express Kusatsu (now called Kusatsu Shiman). On 13 March 2021, the Commuter Rapid that passed this station was abolished, so the station became a stop for all rapid trains.
