Kita-Ageo Station (北上尾駅) is a station with a concourse in Ageo, Saitama Prefecture. East Japan Railway Company runs it on the Takasaki Line. It opened on 17 December 1988.
History
Ageo city's planning map from the Showa era showed a station named 町谷駅 between Ageo and Okegawa stations. In 1986 the mayor of Ageo announced plans for a new station between those two stations, and the city council adopted the plan unanimously. In May 1986 a promotion alliance for the new station was formed, and the mayor became its chairman. In October 1986 the head of the Takasaki railway bureau put the proposal to national railway headquarters. On 31 January 1987 the national railway approved the new station, and an agreement on it was signed the next month. On 1 April 1987, when national railways were split up, the new station passed to East Japan Railway Company (JR East).
In July 1987 the alliance asked the public for name ideas through the city newsletter. Construction began with a groundbreaking ceremony on 20 August 1987. In October 1987 fundraising began, and the alliance published the first issue of its newsletter, My Town My Station News. Four issues were published in total. In November 1987 work on the station building began.
In March 1988 the alliance narrowed the name suggestions to three: Kita-Ageo, ranked first; Shin-Ageo, ranked second; and Ageo Park, ranked fourth. It asked JR East to choose one. Construction stopped on 19 May 1988 and restarted on 13 July 1988. On 8 December 1988 JR East officially chose the name Kita-Ageo. The station opened on 17 December 1988. It was the first station built on petition since the JR split, and the last new station opened in Japan in the Showa era.
The alliance was dissolved on 28 February 1991. Automatic ticket gates came into use on 24 January 1995. Suica could be used from 18 November 2001. In 2006 the platform was temporarily widened, and work began to convert the south stairs to escalators. During 2007 the west station plaza was rebuilt with barrier-free escalators and lifts, the east plaza was developed, and the platform roof was extended. On 3 February 2007 escalators and lifts inside the ticket gates came into use.
In March 2008 the plazas on both sides were completed. In June 2008 barrier-free work was carried out on the east side. In November 2009 an Ageo illumination event began, and the station was decorated with lights. From 1 June 2010 the departure melody became the Ageo city song. On 30 November 2014 the Midori no Madoguchi ticket office closed. On 10 March 2016 the station became unstaffed in the early morning.
