Biwajima Station (枇杷島駅) is a ground-level station with a station building over the tracks, in Kiyosu, Aichi Prefecture. Central Japan Railway Company (JR Central) runs it. It first opened on 1 April 1886 as Kiyosu Station (清洲駅), at another site.
History
Kiyosu Station (清洲駅) opened on 1 April 1886 at a site some distance from the present one. It was the end of the government railway extended from Atsuta. On 1 May 1886 Nagoya-ya Station (名護屋停車場, now Nagoya Station) opened. The government railway was also extended from this station to Owari-Ichinomiya Station (尾張一宮駅), which made it a station on the way. On 1 April 1895 the station was placed under the Tōkaidō Line, later renamed the Tōkaidō Main Line.
On 28 October 1891 the Nōbi earthquake completely destroyed the main station building. On 16 April 1906 the station moved to its present site and was renamed Biwajima Station (枇杷島駅).
On 1 October 1980 freight handling ended, except for trains to private sidings. On 14 March 1985 luggage handling ended. On 1 April 1987 the station became a station of JR Central and Japan Freight Railway (JR Freight).
On 18 March 1993 the Johoku Line of Tokai Transport Service (TKJ, now JR Central Transport Service) was extended here from Owari-Hoshinomiya Station (尾張星の宮駅). In 1995 a private line served a cement packing plant of Osaka Cement, and cement freight trains arrived there. That private line closed on 1 December 1995. On 14 February 2000 automatic ticket gates came into use. On 1 April 2006 the JR Freight station closed, and freight handling ended. On 25 November 2006 TOICA became usable, on JR Central only. Later in 2008 an east-side entrance was added, and the bridge-type station building came into use on 13 December 2008.
On 31 January 2024 the JR all-lines ticket office closed. On 1 February 2024 the station became unstaffed, and a reserved-seat ticket machine with support service was introduced at the same time.
