Fukaya Station (深谷駅) is in Fukaya, Saitama Prefecture. East Japan Railway Company (JR East) runs it on the Takasaki Line. It opened on 21 October 1883.
History
The station opened on 21 October 1883 as a stop on the Nihon Railway (日本鉄道). In July 1895 a private line was laid for the Nihon Renga Seizō brick works. On 1 November 1906 the railway was bought by the government and nationalised. From 12 October 1909 the station was a stop on the Takasaki Line.
On 3 September 1966 it became public that Aragi Seijūrō (荒舩清十郎), a House of Representatives member for Fukaya, had had the station added as an express stop while he was Minister of Transport. It became a political issue, and Aragi resigned as minister after two months in the post. Express trains have stopped here since then. The limited express Kusatsu passes through without stopping.
The private brick line closed on 31 March 1975. Freight handling ended on 15 November 1982. Parcel handling ended on 14 March 1985.
The Midori no Madoguchi ticket office opened on 17 March 1986. On 1 April 1987, when the national railway was split up and privatised, the station became part of East Japan Railway Company (JR East). A travel centre opened the same day. On 10 July 1996 the station building was rebuilt as an elevated station. The design was copied from Tokyo Station, which uses bricks made in Fukaya. Automatic ticket gates were introduced at the same time.
In 1999 the station was selected for the Kanto station list. Suica IC card use began on 18 November 2001. In the early morning, the station became unmanned from 10 March 2016. On 23 April 2018 station operations were contracted out. The Fukaya stationmaster and deputy posts were abolished, and the station came under the control of Honjō Station. The Midori no Madoguchi ticket office closed on 31 October 2023.
