History
Gifu Station (岐阜駅) opened on 21 January 1887 as Kanō Station (加納駅), when the government railway extended from Ogaki to this point. It was an ordinary station. At that time it was north-east of the current site. On 25 April 1887, the Kiso River bridge was completed, linking the station to the existing line between Kisogawa and Taketoyo, and it became a midway station. On 15 December 1888, the station was renamed Gifu Station. In June 1889, the station moved west, to the area near the current Meitetsu Gifu Station. On 1 April 1895, track naming put the station on the Tokaido Line. On 22 July 1913, the station moved to its current site, using a station building moved from the former Aichi Station, which had closed earlier. That building was used until it burned in an air raid.
On 1 November 1920, the Takayama Line opened to Kakamigahara Station. During the war the station was damaged, and a temporary station building was used. On 11 December 1948, the station building was rebuilt. On 1 April 1959, a reinforced concrete two-storey station building was completed, as a public station (民衆駅). On 1 April 1970, a travel centre opened.
On 1 November 1986, freight handling ended as elevated-track works began, and it moved to Gifu Freight Terminal station. On 19 March 1987, a groundbreaking ceremony was held for the elevated-track works. On 1 April 1987, the national railway was split up, and the station became a JR Central station. On 27 November 1987, the Takayama Line was switched to a temporary track. On 25 September 1988, the up Tokaido Line was switched to a temporary track. On 26 February 1989, the down Tokaido Line was switched to a temporary track. On 29 November 1992, the down Tokaido Line and part of the Takayama Line were elevated. On 26 February 1996, the up Tokaido Line and the Takayama Line were fully elevated. On 2 March 1997, the elevated station was completed, automatic ticket gates came into use, and the shopping centre Asty Gifu opened.
In October 1998, demolition of the old north station building began. On 18 October 1999, the south station plaza was completed. In July 2004, demolition of the old south station building ended, and the elevated-track work was complete. On 25 November 2006, TOICA became usable. On 5 February 2007, stained glass was added to the ground-floor windows on the north side. On 29 March 2007, the north bus terminal was completed. On 1 October 2008, the pedestrian deck in the station square was completed and opened fully.
On 1 April 2011, all kiosks on the platforms closed. On 26 March 2016, the limited express Shinano's through running into this station ended. On 23 October 2023, the elevators inside the gates came into full use.
