Hamakawasaki Station (浜川崎駅) is a ground-level station in Kawasaki, Kanagawa Prefecture. East Japan Railway Company and Japan Freight Railway Company run it. It serves the Nambu Line and the JI Tsurumi Line. It opened in 1918 as a freight station.
History
The station opened on 1 May 1918 as the end of a freight branch of the Tōkaidō Main Line, set up by the Railway Agency. It was a freight station. On 10 March 1926 the Tsurumi Rinkō Railway opened and connected to it. On 14 March 1929 Watarida Station opened as a freight station for that railway. On 25 March 1930 the Nambu Railway connected, and New Hamakawasaki Station opened on that line.
Passenger service began at New Hamakawasaki on 10 April 1930 and at Watarida on 28 October 1930. On 1 July 1943 the Tsurumi Rinkō Railway was nationalised as the Tsurumi Line. Watarida was merged into Hamakawasaki, which became the Tsurumi Line station and began passenger service. On 1 April 1944 the Nambu Railway was nationalised as the Nambu Line, and New Hamakawasaki was merged into Hamakawasaki. General freight handling ended on 12 October 1951.
On 1 March 1971 the Tsurumi Line gates were made unstaffed. On 1 April 1987 the station passed to East Japan Railway Company (JR East) and Japan Freight Railway Company (JR Freight), and the Tōkaidō freight line was reorganised. In 1993 the Nambu Line gates were made unstaffed. Suica became usable on 22 March 2002. Automatic ticket machines stopped operating on 28 February 2022.
