History
Hibarigaoka Station (ひばりヶ丘駅) opened on 11 June 1924 as Tanashimachi Station (田無町駅). The Musashino Railway (武蔵野鉄道) ran it. In 1927, Tanashi Station and the Seibu Shinjuku Line had not yet opened. This station, in Hoya village just outside the north edge of the old Tanashi town, was the way into Tanashi town until Tanashi Station opened. On 1 May 1959, the station was renamed Hibarigaoka Station, in step with the building of the Hibarigaoka housing estate.
On 2 June 1960, the platform layout changed from one side platform and one island platform to two island platforms with four tracks. On 1 November 1963, the platforms were lengthened to take ten-car trains, and a footbridge opened at the same time. On 15 October 1967, the elevated station building opened. An automatic ticket gate was added in 1992. In 1999, a departure melody using a wireless microphone was introduced.
On 21 January 2001, the cities of Hoya and Tanashi merged to form Nishitokyo, and the station became part of Nishitokyo. In 2003 the platforms were widened and raised, and the canopies were rebuilt. At the same time, the station was rebuilt with barrier-free access, except for the north stairs. The renovation started in April 2003 and ran until May 2005. In March 2005, new south stairs opened. In May 2005, a convenience store opened on the first floor of the new station building, and the barrier-free work was completed. On 10 November 2005, the Hibarigaoka police box moved next to the south elevator.
On 18 December 2013, a station shopping area called Emio Hibarigaoka opened, using renovated existing shops. On 21 March 2018, all Emio Hibarigaoka shops closed for the station building renovation. On 26 April 2018, the new north stairs, elevator and escalator came into use. On 20 February 2019, the schedule for the station building and elevated shop renovation was announced. On 16 March 2021, the north station rotary opened to traffic, and buses now also stop at the north side.
