Hikone Station (彦根駅) is in Hikone, Shiga. West Japan Railway Company runs it, and Ohmi Railway (近江鉄道) also has a station here. It opened on 1 July 1889 on the government railway.

History

The station opened on 1 July 1889 with the government railway section between the branch point at Fukaya and Baba (now Zeze), and handled passengers and freight from the start. The station became part of the Tokaido Line on 1 April 1895. Ohmi Railway opened its line from here to Aichigawa on 11 June 1898. The Hikone to Maibara section opened on 15 March 1931.

On 1 March 1944 Ohmi Railway absorbed the Yokaichi Railway, and the line through here became its main line. Maibara to Kyoto was electrified on 19 November 1956.

Shinkaisoku trains began running to here as local trains on 14 March 1985. On 1 November 1986 Shinkaisoku trains began running through to here, stopping only at Omi-Hachiman and Notogawa, and freight handling ended. JR West took over the station on 1 April 1987. On 12 March 1988 the freight link with Ohmi Railway ended. The Biwako Line name came into use on 13 March 1988. Automatic ticket gates opened on 12 April 1998.

Elevator work began on 10 November 2000. The elevator came into use on 3 March 2001, when the JR and Ohmi Railway ticket gates were separated. ICOCA could be used from 1 November 2003. The east exit opened on 19 March 2007. The Ohmi Railway Museum opened inside the station on 21 March 2007.

Station numbering began on 17 March 2018. The Ohmi Railway Museum closed on 8 December 2018. The Midori no Madoguchi counter closed on 31 May 2023.
