Kariya Station (刈谷駅) is in Kariya, Aichi. Central Japan Railway Company and Nagoya Railroad both run services here. It opened on 1 September 1888 when the government railway began train service between Obu and Hamamatsu.

History

Three villages applied for a stop on 9 September 1887. The Kariya station was set up at its present site in January 1888. The government line between Obu and Hamamatsu opened in August 1888, and train service began on 1 September 1888. In April 1890 a combined army and navy exercise was held nearby, and Kariya Station was the access point for it. On 1 April 1895 the line was named the Tokaido Line.

Double track was laid from Obu to Kariya on 27 January 1908, and from Kariya to Anjo on 25 March 1908. The Tokaido Line was renamed the Tokaido Main Line on 12 October 1909. The Mikawa Railway opened a new Kariya station on 5 February 1914, and extended its line to Chiryu on 28 October 1915. On 10 November 1927 the Mikawa station moved and merged with the government station, which became a shared station with a south exit.

The Mikawa Railway was merged into Nagoya Railroad on 1 June 1941. Land readjustment around the station was approved on 7 November 1951 and completed on 25 April 1956. The new station building began ticket sales on 8 March 1953, and the rebuilding was completed on 5 May 1953. Electric trains began running on the Tokaido Line on 21 July 1953.

A clock tower was placed on the south exit on 14 June 1971. Elevated double track between Kariya and Kariya-shi was completed on 14 December 1980. Mikawa Line express services ended on 20 November 1981. Freight handling on the Tokaido Line ended on 1 November 1986, and a container centre opened on the former freight site.

JR Central took over the Tokaido Line station on 1 April 1987, and JR Freight took over the container centre. JR Central automatic ticket gates came into use on 27 June 1992. The Minakuru Kariya Wing Deck on the south side was completed on 1 December 2008. The manaca card could be used on Nagoya Railroad from 11 February 2011.
