Kasama Station (笠間駅) is a station in Kasama, Ibaraki, on the Mito Line, run by East Japan Railway Company. It opened on 16 January 1889 as a Mito Railway station.
History
The Mito Railway opened the station on 16 January 1889. On 1 March 1892 it was transferred to the Nippon Railway. It was nationalized on 31 October 1906, and on 12 October 1909 it became a station on the Mito Line.
On 22 November 1915 the Kasama person-hauled tramway opened from the station front to Kasama town. It was later renamed the Kasama Inari Tramway. It closed on 17 November 1930.
Freight handling ended on 20 February 1970. Luggage handling ended on 1 February 1984. East Japan Railway Company took over on 1 April 1987. A Midori no Madoguchi ticket office opened on 20 December 1992.
Suica became usable on 18 November 2001. The Midori ticket office closed on 14 March 2006, and a Moshimoshi ticket machine Kaeru-kun was installed on 15 March 2006.
A departure melody was introduced in March 2009. The Kaeru-kun machine closed on 27 February 2012. The departure melody was changed on 29 April 2014. From 1 April 2015 JR Mito Railway Service took over station work. On 1 July 2015 the station work passed to JR East Station Service.
