History

The station opened on 21 July 1970 as Kita-Kashima Station on the Kashima Rinkai freight line, for freight only. On 12 November 1970 a national railway freight line opened from Kashima-Jingu to here. Passenger trains on the Kashima Rinkai line began on 25 July 1978, and the station was passed through. Those passenger trains ended on 1 December 1983. On 14 March 1985 the Oarai-Kashima Line opened, and passenger service here was nominally resumed.

The station became unstaffed on 1 November 1986, and JR East took over on 1 April 1987. On 14 February 1993 it was decided that the Sumitomo Metal football team, later Kashima Antlers, would join the professional league from the 1993 season. Work on passenger facilities began on 15 May 1993. The first J League match held at Kashima Stadium was on 16 May 1993.

In 1994 the parties agreed to passenger service from that year, and on 12 March 1994 the station was renamed Kashima Soccer Stadium. It served passengers only on match days, as a temporary station.

In March 1995 the town mayor asked JR East to plan transport for the new prefectural stadium, and in April 1995 the mayor made the same request to Kashima Rinkai. The first meeting of the parties involved was held on 8 November 1995.
