Kawaguchi Station (川口駅) is in Kawaguchi, Saitama. JR East runs it on the Keihin-Tohoku Line. It opened on 10 September 1910 as Kawaguchimachi Station.
History
The station opened on 10 September 1910 as Kawaguchimachi Station. It was renamed Kawaguchi Station on 15 February 1934, when Kawaguchi town became a city.
On 28 February 1942 a suburban train bound for Omiya ran into the back of a passenger train standing at the station. Six people died and 11 were injured. On 28 March 1946 a special train for the Showa Emperor's visit to Saitama ran between Konosu and Kawaguchi.
Freight and parcel handling ended on 1 November 1986. JR East took over the station on 1 April 1987. Automatic ticket gates came into use on 30 May 1992.
Suica could be used from 18 November 2001. In 2006 the first woman station master at JR East's Omiya branch took up the post here. Platform doors came into use in 2019. The shared office STATION BOOTH opened outside the ticket gates on 2 July 2020. On 6 March 2021 the ticket gates, ticket machines and Midori window were combined, and a talking reserved-seat ticket machine was introduced. On 24 April 2025 JR East's Omiya branch and Kawaguchi city signed a basic agreement on building Ueno-Tokyo Line platforms and a free passage.
