Naganohara-Kusatsuguchi Station (長野原草津口駅) is a ground-level station in Naganohara, Gunma Prefecture. East Japan Railway Company (JR East) runs it. It opened on 2 January 1945 as a freight station.
History
The station opened on 2 January 1945 as a freight station called Naganohara Station (長野原駅), when the Naganohara Line opened between Shibukawa and here. A private line for the Nippon Kōkan Gunma iron mine also opened at the same time, from here to Taishi. On 20 April 1946 passenger services began, and the station became an ordinary station. On 1 October 1952 the Nippon Kōkan private line was taken over, and a freight branch from here to Taishi opened. On 21 June 1954 passenger services began on the Taishi section.
On 10 June 1967 the line between Shibukawa and here was electrified. On 1 November 1970 the Taishi section was suspended. On 7 March 1971 the line was extended from here to Ōmae, and it was renamed the Agatsuma Line (吾妻線). Freight handling ended. On 27 March 1971 the station moved into a station building over the tracks. On 1 May 1971 the suspended Taishi section was abolished. On 1 February 1984 luggage handling ended.
On 1 April 1987 the station became a JR East station. On 1 December 1991 it was renamed Naganohara-Kusatsuguchi Station. On 5 March 2006 the Midori no Madoguchi closed, and a ticket machine called Moshimoshi Kaeru-kun (もしもし券売機Kaeruくん) was installed.
From 25 June 2011 the station was rebuilt in stages. In the first stage, the first track became a dead-end track, the footbridge between the platforms and the station building was removed, the station office moved to the ground floor, and the gates were placed at ground level. On 13 February 2012 the Kaeru-kun ticket machine closed. A ceremony for the new station building was held in July 2013. The new building opened on 1 August 2013.
On 1 October 2014 the station joined the Tokyo suburban fare zone, and Suica became usable. On 2 August 2015 the Naganohara, Kusatsu and Roku-gō Station (長野原・草津・六合ステーション) opened in front of the station, with a restaurant and a souvenir shop. On 26 March 2016 the limited express Kusatsu (now Kusatsu-Shiman) began running to and from here instead of Manza-Kanokakuchi Station.
