Narita Station (成田駅) is in Narita, Chiba Prefecture. East Japan Railway Company runs it on the Narita Line, and the Narita Express also stops here. It opened on 19 January 1897 as a station of the Narita Railway (成田鉄道).
History
The station opened on 19 January 1897 when the Narita Railway opened the line from Sakura to Narita. On 29 December 1897 the line was extended to Namegawa, and on 2 February 1901 to Ajiki. On 1 July 1911 the Tako Line of the Chiba Prefectural Railway opened.
The Narita Railway was bought by the state on 1 September 1920. The Tako Line was transferred to the second Narita Railway on 1 April 1927. The station building was rebuilt in 1935. The Tako Line was suspended on 11 January 1944, because its materials were needed for railway construction in Indonesia. The Tako Line was abolished on 9 October 1946.
In July 1977 work began on a new station building set back from the old one, to make room for airport bus stops. The current elevated station building was completed on 25 April 1979. Freight handling ended on 9 August 1983, and parcel handling on 14 March 1985. JR East took over on 1 April 1987.
The Narita Airport branch line opened on 19 March 1991. Suica became usable on 18 November 2001, and toward Sawara on 14 March 2009. On 1 July 2014 the departure melody changed to Unarikun Now!, the theme song of Narita's mascot character Unari-kun.
The Bi-u Plaza travel office closed on 31 August 2018. The Midori no Madoguchi ticket office closed on 31 October 2021, and a talking reserved-seat machine was introduced on 1 November 2021.
