Naruto Station (成東駅) is in Sanmu, Chiba Prefecture. East Japan Railway Company (JR East) runs it on the Tōgane Line and the Sōbu Main Line. It opened on 1 May 1897.
History
The station opened on 1 May 1897 as a station of the Sōbu Railway. On 1 September 1907 the Sōbu Railway was bought by the government, and the station became a station of the Imperial Railways Agency. On 1 November 1911 the Tōgane Line opened from Tōgane to this station.
On 13 August 1945 American Grumman aircraft attacked the station with machine-gun fire. Anti-aircraft guns and ammunition carried on a freight wagon standing at the station caught fire. Station staff and soldiers tried to put out the fire, but there was an explosion and more fire. Many staff and soldiers died. The station building and platforms were destroyed, and passenger cars were burned. A memorial to the air raid was erected in August 1957.
Freight handling ended on 1 December 1981. On 1 April 1987 the station passed to JR East. Automatic ticket gates came into use on 13 July 1995. Sōbu Line rapid trains began running through the station in December 1999. Suica became usable on 18 November 2001 for trips towards Chiba and Ōhara.
The station was renovated in 2008 and its exterior was given a Western style. On 14 March 2009 Suica became usable for trips towards Chōshi.
In December 2012 a new footbridge was built, and an elevator was installed on the platforms when the old footbridge was removed. The reserved-seat ticket machine stopped operating on 22 February 2016. In 2018 the south terminal was completed.
