Nikkō Station (日光駅) is in Nikkō, Tochigi Prefecture. East Japan Railway Company (JR East) runs it on the Nikkō Line. It opened on 1 August 1890.
History
The station opened on 1 August 1890 as a Nippon Railway station. On 1 November 1906 the Nippon Railway was nationalised, and the station became a station of the national railway. On 12 October 1909 the station became a station of the Nikkō Line. On 10 August 1910 the Nikkō Electric Railway opened its Nikkō stop in front of the station. This was later the Nikkō-ekimae station of the Tobu Nikkō tramway line.
The second station building was completed in August 1912. The guest room was refitted for a visit by the British crown prince in 1922. On 20 November 1956 platform 2 was lengthened and raised, and its canopy was extended and the overbridge rebuilt. On 22 September 1959 the Nikkō Line electrification was completed, and the semi-express Nikkō began running. The Tobu Nikkō tramway's Nikkō-ekimae station closed on 25 February 1968.
On 15 November 1982 the express Nikkō was abolished, and all express trains to and from here ended. Freight handling ended on 1 February 1984. Parcel handling ended on 14 March 1985. On 1 April 1987 the station passed to JR East.
On 14 October 1997 the station was selected for the Kanto station list. The reason given was its white wooden building, which keeps the look of the Meiji era. On 15 March 2008 Suica became usable, and automatic ticket gates were installed. In September 2009 the station building was renovated in a retro style as part of an anniversary project. The station building was renewed on 25 March 2017. An elevator came into use on 26 February 2022.
