The station opened simultaneously with the opening of the Japanese National Railways Tokaido Main Line's former Yokohama Station - Odawara Station section, initially starting passenger and freight operations, as its establishment was not part of the original plan for the Tokaido Main Line extension, but was prompted by a proposal from physician Shuzo Matsukata to introduce seaside bathing.
