Oyama Station (小山駅) is a station in Oyama, Tochigi Prefecture. East Japan Railway Company and Japan Freight Railway Company run it. It serves the Mito Line, the Ryōmō Line, the Utsunomiya Line, the Tobu Tōjō Line and the Tōhoku Shinkansen. It opened on 16 July 1885.
History
Oyama Station opened on 16 July 1885 as a station on the Nippon Railway line, now the Tōhoku Main Line. On 22 May 1888, the Ryōmō Railway line, now the Ryōmō Line, opened. On 16 January 1889, the Mito Railway line, now the Mito Line, opened. On 1 March 1892, the Mito Railway transferred its business to the Nippon Railway. On 1 January 1897, the Ryōmō Railway also transferred its business to the Nippon Railway. On 1 November 1906, the Nippon Railway was nationalised under the Railway Nationalisation Act and became a state railway station. On 12 October 1909, a track naming decision placed the station on the Tōhoku Main Line.
On 6 January 1969, an east-side temporary ticket gate opened. On 12 October 1971, it was decided that Tōhoku Shinkansen trains would stop here. On 25 December 1972, construction of the Tōhoku Shinkansen began. On 30 May 1978, the current station building opened. On 5 June 1978, test trains began running on the Tōhoku Shinkansen test line. On 15 July 1978, the station building complex opened.
In January 1980, an Ito-Yokado store opened on former railway land near the station. On 23 June 1982, the Tōhoku Shinkansen opened. On 7 September 1985, a directly run coffee house, Bell Oyama, opened on the concourse inside the ticket gates. On 1 April 1987, the national railway was split up and privatised, and the station became a station of JR East and JR Freight.
On 7 March 1995, automatic ticket gates started at the west exit. On 9 March 1995, they started at the south exit. On 10 December 1998, they started at the Shinkansen gate. On 18 November 2001, Suica became usable on JR East. On 12 October 2003, Suica FREX commuter passes became usable on the Tōhoku Shinkansen. On 16 October 2005, the ATOS system started on the Utsunomiya Line north of Nogi.
On 4 December 2011, the central ticket gate was completed and opened, and the west exit gate was closed. On 23 June 2012, the central free passage was completed. On 7 September 2012, the south exit gate was closed. In March 2013, Dila Oyama, a shopping facility inside the ticket gates, opened. In March 2014, a new station front plaza was completed on the east side. On 1 April 2018, the Touch and Go Shinkansen service started. On 14 March 2020, the Shinkansen e-ticket service started. On 1 October 2025, Eki-net Q Ticket service started on the Tōhoku Shinkansen.
