Sano Station (佐野駅) in Sano, Tochigi, is run by East Japan Railway Company and serves the Ryōmō Line. It opened on 22 May 1888.
History
The station opened on 22 May 1888 as a station of the Ryomo Railway (両毛鉄道). On 10 August 1889 a stop on the Aso horse-drawn tram (安蘇馬車鉄道) opened just south of it. On 20 March 1894 the horse tram closed, and the Sano Railway (佐野鉄道) opened a station on the same site. On 1 January 1897 the Ryomo Railway was sold to the Nippon Railway (日本鉄道).
On 1 September 1902 the Sano Railway's station was renamed Sanomachi Station (佐野町駅). On 17 June 1903 it moved north of the Nippon Railway station and was linked to it by a connecting line. The Nippon Railway was nationalised on 1 November 1906. On 12 October 1909 the government station became part of the Ryomo Line.
On 12 August 1912 the Tobu Railway merged the Sano Railway, and the line became the Tobu Sano Line. The Tatebayashi to Sano section opened on 2 August 1914, and the old Sanomachi station closed. On 16 October 1914 the line from Sanomachi (now Sano-shi Station) to Sano opened. In 1934, during Army grand maneuvers in the area, an imperial special train carrying Emperor Showa ran between Maebashi and Sano.
The Japanese National Railways took over on 1 June 1949. Freight handling ended on 15 November 1982, and luggage handling ended on 1 February 1984. JR East took over on 1 April 1987. On 17 September 1999 the station building, a Western-style wooden building from the early Showa period, was named one of the Kanto Station Selection (関東の駅百選).
The Suica card became usable on 18 November 2001. On 16 April 2003 the station moved into a bridge station building, and the old first platform of JR East closed. In March 2006 the Midori ticket window closed, and a ticket machine called もしもし券売機Kaeruくん started. On 22 February 2012 that machine was replaced by a reserved-seat ticket machine. In March 2014 automatic gates were installed on the Tobu side.
