Tomita Station (富田駅) is a ground-level station in Ashikaga, Tochigi, on the Ryōmō Line, run by East Japan Railway Company. It opened on 18 February 1893 as a Ryōmō Railway (両毛鉄道) station.
History
The Ryōmō Railway opened the station on 18 February 1893. It was transferred to the Nippon Railway on 1 January 1897 and nationalized on 1 November 1906. From 28 April 1915 the Akami Light Railway ran from Tomita to Degarahara (出流原). The Akami Light Railway closed on 20 October 1927. On 1 June 1949 the station passed to the Japanese National Railways.
Freight handling ended on 1 September 1961. Luggage handling ended on 1 February 1984. On 14 March 1985 the station became unstaffed, with special ticket checks by staff from a mobile operations centre for some years afterwards. East Japan Railway Company took over on 1 April 1987.
A new station building was completed in March 1999. Suica became usable on 18 November 2001. A new toilet, joined to the station building, was completed in 2007. A waiting shelter on platform 2 was completed in November 2013.
The station became fully unstaffed on 20 March 2018. Ashikaga Flower Park Station opened on 1 April 2018 between Ashikaga and Tomita, and for fares it was treated the same as Tomita. That fare arrangement ended on 14 March 2020.
