Sekigahara Station (関ケ原駅) is a ground station in Sekigahara, Gifu Prefecture. Central Japan Railway Company (JR Central) runs it. It opened on 1 May 1883.
History
Sekigahara Station opened on 1 May 1883 with the Nagahama to Sekigahara section of the state railway. At first it was a general station, connected to Nagahama Station through Shunsho Station (春照駅). On 1 July 1889, an extension opened from a junction, later Fukaya Station (深谷駅), through Ōmi-Nagaoka and Maibara to Baba (now Zeze). The section to Nagahama was suspended. On 12 January 1891, Fukaya Station opened as a freight station at the junction, and the Fukaya to Nagahama freight line resumed. On 1 April 1895, the line was named as part of the Tōkaidō Line, later the Tōkaidō Main Line. On 15 October 1899, a new line with easier gradients opened from Sekigahara to Nagaoka. On 28 December 1899, the old lines through Fukaya were abolished.
On 11 October 1944, a separate line with easier gradients opened, used by down trains only, running via Shin-Tarui. The down track between Minami-Arao signal station, Tarui and Sekigahara was removed. On 1 November 1946, the down main line was restored.
On 1 October 1973, freight handling ended. On 1 February 1984, parcel handling ended. On 1 November 1986, Shin-Tarui Station on the Shin-Tarui line closed, and all ordinary trains began running via Tarui. On 1 April 1987, the national railway was split up, and Central Japan Railway Company (JR Central) took over the station.
In April 1991, the first last train from Nagoya that ended here began to run, and trains were kept overnight here. On 6 October 1991, the first Sawayaka Walking event was held here, on a course called the Sekigahara Battlefield Tour. On 25 November 2006, TOICA became usable in the direction of Nagoya.
On 26 March 2016, a timetable revision shortened the route of the Home Liner Sekigahara to Ōgaki, so it no longer ran to here. On 2 March 2019, TOICA became usable west of here, toward Samegai. On 31 January 2024, the ticket office for all JR lines closed here. On 1 February 2024, a reserved seat ticket machine with a customer support service started, and the station became unstaffed.
